Finless porpoise is the flagship species of the Yangtze River and an important indicator species for assessing the status of the Yangtze River ecosystem, whose fate can directly reflect the health of the Yangtze River. To protect the finless porpoise is to protect the ecological environment of the Yangtze River, as well as to protect human being.

In summer and autumn of 2022, Poyang Lake was in severe drought and entered the dry period on August 6, which was the earliest time since records kept in 1951.

But the finless porpoises were being carefully taken care of under the severe drought. Many departments in Jiangxi carried out emergency baiting work to make sure them having no worries about food.

In order to make the finless porpoises live and travel well, patrol teams and fishing guards were assembled to guard the finless porpoises in the areas along the lake.

Through the rise and fall, wandering in the river and lake, the smart finless porpoises know where to live. The tide of Poyang Lake is always the warmest home for finless porpoises.

For thousands of years, the clear water of the lake is not only the paradise of finless porpoise, but also makes Jiangxi the reputation of “the land of fish and rice”, and the beautiful scenes of fishing and singing in the evening framed here.

Clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver. A 10-year fishing ban in Poyang Lake began at midnight on Jan.1,2010, one year earlier than the national regulation.

Fishermen were the key to the fishing ban, but also were the difficulty for the ban to be carried out. Jiangxi has solved the problem successfully by making the former fishermen join the fishing protection team.

How did the porpoises go after the fishing ban? The 2022 Yangtze finless porpoise scientific expedition was launched on Sep.19, which was the 4th scientific expedition for finless porpoise in the Yangtze River Basin.

The results of the last scientific expedition for Yangtze finless porpoise in 2017 showed that the population size was about 1,012,which was critically endangered.

According to the preliminary results of the 2022 Yangtze finless porpoise scientific expedition, the natural population of finless porpoises has recovered compared to 2017, and the number of mothers and newborns has increased significantly.

Encountering with the ‘smiling angel’ once again, the scientific expedition team firmly believed that as Jiangxi continues to protect the lake clear and the 10-year fishing ban is promoted in-depth, more finless porpoises will be seen in Poyang Lake in the coming spring, when the water is deep and baits are abundant.

The finless porpoises have feelings, and the river and lake are connected. We are gladly to see that the natural population of the finless porpoises in Yangtze River Basin has also recovered in recent years: the number of finless porpoises in the Yangtze River sections in Hubei, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces has shown significant growth.

For thousands of years, the smart finless porpoise chose to settle in Poyang Lake, where the diligent and brave people of Jiangxi were also bred by this water. The fishes are fat and the finless porpoises are happy in Poyang Lake nowadays, we have reasons to firmly believe that as long as we respect nature, follow nature and protect nature, the nature will definitely give us the best gift and return.

The finless porpoise smiles, the Yangtze River is at peace. In the soft waves of Poyang Lake after sunset, what a beautiful picture of the harmonious coexistence between human and nature!
